Discussion Outline for 9/10

Hey everyone! I looked over everybody's posts up to this point and tried to put together an outline that would talk about some of the stuff you guys talked about, and more! Hopefully it's clear. I'll do my best in discussion tomorrow, so be prepared to talk and stuff!

Outline:

Who really owns the land?
  • Specifically, does Marmaduke really have the rights to everything on this land? If someone kills something on his land, does ownership of the kill go to the hunter or the owner of the land ? Does he own every animal in the forest just because of a couple papers? Why not John? Or Natty?
Nature vs. Settlers
  • The destruction of land for settlement has been a hot point of contention among the characters. How do you think the destruction of nature has affected them within the story?
  • Which side do you believe to be in the right? Is it better to forge ahead with progress heedless of others, or to respect the rights of others but end up on a plateau, so to speak.
The Outsiders vs. The Townspeople
  • How does Natty, John, and Edwards compare to characters such as Richard and Marmaduke?
  • Do you think these characters are alienated by the townsfolk at all? Is any one character more left out than another?
Templeton: A Melting Pot

  • What sort of effect does the cast have on the book as a whole?
  • When you get together people like Le Quoi, Hartmann, the Harringtons, and other characters, does it help or hinder the reader to have such a menagerie of a cast all together? Do you think they end up as stereotypes at all?
  • Are there any characters you can think of that interact with each other, and as such, reveal themselves or work as a foil to one another?
