The Pioneers focuses on describing the changes that occurred
after the arrival of immigrants. It depicts how the land and the natives who
were originally here were affected. I believe as the story unfolds we feel bad
for Natty and the other natives and we take their side because we found it
wrong that new people were unjustly coming and trying to dictate how they were
to live their lives. But, at the same time I do side with Marmaduke and the
rest of the civilized people. If we take a look at Turner’s article he
describes that when the immigrants first arrived they did conform to the native’s
lifestyle and it was little by little that they began to modify and make
changes that would benefit all, or at least what they believed would be of
benefit to all. Thus, Marmaduke had a reason to implement these new rules, they
were ultimately for what he believed to be good. He was not trying to change
what they were doing but how they were going about doing them. It was the clash
between these two different cultures that drove for all the changes to occur,
they were necessary. Although the changes that were made may seem wrong to some
people I believe that we need to understand that it was simply their way of
viewing the world and how it was supposed to be running. The change of culture
is something that has constantly been occurring in every society that there is
and is simply what was occurring after Marmaduke’s arrival.
Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteYou've highlighted some of the key issues we've been discussing in class. Work on being more specific in your posts. Analyze language from the text rather than making generalized claims about the entire novel.
All best,
